Economic and Policy Perspectives with Dan Varroney | October 27, 2026
An unsold house is not necessarily an affordable house.
September new-home sales were essentially flat, at a seasonally adjusted annual pace of 676,000, with 8.4 months of supply at that pace. The reported monthly change was not statistically significant. These preliminary estimates are subject to revision.
For builders, slow sales can tie up money needed for the next project, affecting work for local crews and suppliers.
The practical test is whether available homes match payments families can afford. National inventory alone cannot answer that local question.
For builders and lenders: what is stopping buyers in your market from moving forward? I would welcome your perspective.
